The Canoe Club Legacy
The Matt Douglas Series of Novels from Author, Bill Bandy
About Bill Bandy
Bill Bandy writes about the men who serve, the women who marry them, and what the years do to both. He is the author of The Canoe Club, the first novel in the Canoe Club Legacy, a multi-series fiction universe that follows four Naval Academy friends and their families across three decades of American life. He is a Navy veteran and a working railroad man, a conductor and locomotive engineer who writes on his days off.
The Navy Years
From 1984 to 1986, Bill served aboard the frigate USS Fanning (FF-1076) as an Operations Specialist, standing watches in the ship's Combat Information Center, the darkened space where radar, radio traffic and contact reports come together into one picture of the sea around the ship. He went on to Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 11, a coastal surveillance unit built to keep watch over harbors and their approaches, and served there until 1988.
Those years are the ground the books stand on. When a scene puts a reader in a ship's combat center or on a Navy pier in the late 1980s, it was written by a man who stood there, and his memory settles any question of how it looked, sounded and felt. Where his own service runs out, he goes looking for the people who were there. Bill belongs to a number of Navy veterans' groups, and he regularly puts out the word for sailors and officers who lived through the events his novels touch.
After the Navy
When he took off the uniform, Bill went to work with his hands. He spent fifteen years, from 1988 to 2003, in the cab of heavy trucks and equipment. Later he built an inspection business that he ran from 2011 to 2020, doing mold inspection, testing and remediation along with home inspections and radon and asbestos work, and he spent a couple of years in the insurance business along the way. In 2017 he went to work for the railroad, where he works today as a conductor and locomotive engineer.
That working life is in the books as surely as the Navy is. Bill knows what it is to earn a living in a trade, to answer to a crew and a clock, and to come home tired, and his characters live in that world too.
The Canoe Club Legacy
The Canoe Club Legacy begins in the summer of 1987, when four friends fresh out of Annapolis (Matt Douglas, Vic, Fredo and Adam) report to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training in Coronado, California. BUD/S is built to find the breaking point of every man who enters it. The Canoe Club follows the four of them into it and through what comes after, and it is where readers first meet Elizabeth, the woman who becomes the heart of the entire series.
From there the universe grows into the story of four men and the women they love, followed for more than thirty years. Each man has a world of his own, and none of them gets through his alone. Bill will tell you his best days at the desk are the ones when all four are in the same room, or when Matt and Elizabeth are alone together and talking.
The series runs in three lines.
Matt Douglas, USN follows Matt's naval career, beginning with The Canoe Club. Book Two, Team Guy, is in final revision.
The Branson Years takes up Matt and Elizabeth's life after the Navy, when they put down roots in Branson, Missouri, in the hills of the Ozarks. It's a town that leans conservative and still makes room for people who don't, and it's where the Douglases face the political divide running through their own family, as it runs through so many American families. Every volume carries the subtitle A Branson, Missouri Novel.
Ship Mates gives Vic, Fredo and Adam books of their own, each told from inside his own life, so readers come to know every man in the Canoe Club on his own terms.
Bill isn't out to write another special-operations thriller. The training is brutal, the danger is real and the ships go to sea, but the books are about the people in them: a friendship among four men that holds for decades, a marriage that steers a life, and families who keep loving each other across real differences. His rule for the whole series is that the turmoil of the times is the weather and the people are the story, and that the wedge driving Americans apart is the villain, never either side of it. He writes characters for men and women alike to care about. And the books are clean. Bill reads every word aloud to his audience, and there is no profanity in them.
Read Along
Bill publishes independently, and he has built the Canoe Club Legacy around reading it to you. Every week on his YouTube channel he reads a new chapter aloud, fifteen to twenty minutes at a sitting, with illustrations of the scenes running alongside. A short background video each week opens up the world behind the next reading: San Diego in 1987, the training grounds, the gear and the ships.
Readers who sign up for his free weekly newsletter, the Canoe Club Legacy Mission Brief, get each week's chapter excerpt a day before it goes live on YouTube, along with Understanding The Tech, a plain-English column on the training, equipment or operations in that chapter.
The Canoe Club is available now on Amazon in Kindle and paperback.
Bill's plan is a long one: keep writing, keep reading, and keep the channel going for as long as he can sit in front of a camera. Join the Canoe Club. Subscribe to the Mission Brief, free, and follow along every week.
